550t Oregon - Pricing and Availability
Of course, one of the most important variables here is the pricing. With the Garmin 550 and 550t, don't be surprised to shell out around $500. (By the way: the difference between the 550 and 550t? Pre-installed U.S. maps are available on the 550t. Maybe not something Australians will want to pay more for.)
Conclusions? The Garin Oregon 550 isn't necessarily a gadget that will change your life, but if you've been hankering for a good handheld GPS device and need a digital camera to supplement your trips, you wouldn't go wrong here. Being able to keep the two functions in one product will save you space and a little bit of time. Remember: you bring the adventure; let your handheld GPS help you out a little along the way!

Garmin 550t Oregon - Maps and Mapping
The “t” designation of the 550t model basically means you have some preloaded topographical maps. What’s actually on the device depends on the region you purchase it in. In Europe I have a recreational map of Europe which is actually very good, I’m not sure how much use it really is though as I have the TopoSwiss maps and the European City Navigator maps which cover in different details most places I go.
I also have the complete Topo France maps and the OS GB Snowdonia maps.
The way the device performs in terms of map display and routing is as much about the quality of those maps as the device itself and the firmware. As a result I’ll write about the maps in more detail another time.

Oregon Garmin 550t - Cycle Use
I have the optional cycle mount as well. This attaches more or less permanently to the cycle handlebars using cable-ties. It would be possible to remove and switch it to another bike if you replaced the cable ties each time. In practice if you had more than one bike it’s probably better to use more than one mount as they are not too expensive.
Actually using the 550t on the bike is very good, initially I had some issues with the 550t locking up or losing routing but these seem to be rectified in the course of some recent firmware upgrades. It’s the use of the bike that I’m probably the most pleased with, I’ve never used a GPS for cycling before and it’s really excellent. I had a basic trip computer on the bike previously but I’ve discard this as the GPS produces enough data for me and it’s available on the screen while I’m out and in the computer back home.

Garmin Oregon 550t - 3.2 Megapixel Camera
I don’t think I’ll stop carrying a camera just yet but the internal camera isn’t bad at all. It’s quite handy if you’re doing something like preparing a route for someone, you can take a photo’ and have it tagged with the precise location and associate it with a waypoint. That’s useful if you want to make a quick note about a turning someone might miss or similar.
Thanks to my neighbors cat for being a model!
The microSD card slot is accessible only by removing the rear cover and the batteries. It feels extremely fragile and the locking gate is flimsy, what’s pretty clear is that this wouldn’t take many cycles of card swaps before breaking completely. The microSD cards themselves are also small and field swaps would be a real pain.
So it makes sense if you can fit all your maps onto internal memory and a single card and I’ve been able to do that for most common maps. My complete TopoSwiss mapset is around 400mb surprisingly, I suppose Switzerland is a small country afterall, so I have that on the internal memory. The entire Europe City Navigator is around 1.85gb and the complete Topo France is 2.7gb so this pair would exceed the Garmin limit on paper which is for a 4gb card.
However, I’m currently using a SanDisk microSDHC 8gb card, part number SANDISK SDSDQB-8192-E11, and it’s running fine. So I can fit both the Europe City Navigator and Topo France on that along with an OS GB map and still have ample space for storage of routes and waypoints.

550t Garmin - A Look on the Oregon 550
First, here's a basic rundown of what the Oregon 550t is: It's a hand-held GPS unit that allows you to take pictures, track your elevation, and, of course, navigate to your heart's content. It's not an iPhone, but it will do a better job of telling you where you are and where you're going.
Oregon 550t The new feature, of course, is the one that tells you where you've been: the digital camera. Johnny Appleseed GPS has the details: you'll find a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera with up to a 4x zoom. It's not the most versatile camera you'll ever use, but it gets the job done.
If you've never had a need for a handheld GPS device in the first place, you might not want to leave your picture-taking to one. But if you're a frequent hiker who can't get enough of the sights, this Garmin will keep your packing light.
